Final Fantasy (official studio MCD)

Review Piffather August 2004 - Score:

By: Louis Koot

At first i expected another female fronted gothic band when i got my hands on this mcd from After The Silence with very tasteful fantasy artwork. But luckily the music on Final Fantasy is in the good old melodic hardrock fashion. Just little hints of symphonic influences flow through the music here and there. Like the way some keyboard parts could remind you of Nightwish but without all the bombast.

It's a relief After The Silence isn't the next band to surface on the hype of gothic rock as we are already worn out by the numerous of similar sounding bands, especially those lacking originality. Doesn't mean to say this disc is earthshocking. It contains four tracks namely Final Fantasy, Weary Angels Heart, C'est La Vie and Resurrection with melodic metal that is good but not extraordinary. Singer Ingrid Van Den Hof - Van Den Berg draws the attention on top of some smart but never too complicated metal. She has a good clear voice but sometimes sounds to me a little bit off balanced. Another thing that stands out is the pumping bass sound that (like on Weary Angels Heart) is very prominent. All musicians are thoroughly capable of handling their stuff and the production is more than alright.

Of course only these four tracks don't fully justify the total of After The Silence's capabilities but it gives a nice introduction to a band with great potential!
