Tower of Souls (demo cd)

Review Metalkrant October 2010 - Score: -

Band: After the Silence – Tower of Souls
Label: direct management
Release: OUT NOW

By: Rien de Graaf

More information about the band:
After The Silence was raised in 2000 and brings melodic hardrock with sympho / progressive / classic Rockinfluences. In fact the music of After The Silence contains so many different styles, so their music can't be reduced to one single musical style. In the beginning of 2003 ATS recorded some tracks in the rehearsalroom just with the first goal to get more gigs. The demo was also picked up by several rock e-zines and the band received very positive reviews. After all this positivity the band released their first official 4-track mini-cd in 2004, called ‘Final Fantasy’. Through the years several bandmembers left te band. In august 2009 the band is finalyy complete again and they're able to start with a clean slate. Now, in 2010 the band releases the demo Tower of Souls. After the Silence already shared the stage in the past with well known acts like among others; Corpse Candle, Xerpentor, Flesh Made Sin, Zone, Sanity, Moneypower, Wastelands, Purple Rainbow, All Too Human, Delain, Cutting Daisy, Antubis, Lágrima and Calibern.

Line-up:

  • Ingrid van den Hof-van den Berg - Vocals
  • Willem van den Hof - Guitar
  • Ardy van Breemen - Guitar
  • Ron Vielvoye - Drums
  • Hans van Iersel - Bass
  • Eddie van den Boogaard – Keyboards

The album:
The 3rd record ‘Tower of Souls’ by After the Silence contains 4 tracks and they are recorded "live" directly into the recording equipment. This all happened at a location at the Parachutists association in the middle of Holland in Hilversum, where the band was making use of 1 classroom. The record is only meant to gather more gigs. I was notified previously it wouldn't be a studio recording like the former cd ‘Final Fantasy’. You can certainly hear this rather clear. The songs are sounding a little bit muzzy and not everything is in a good balance. Does this mean the result is up with the fun? Absolutely not! On this record the band shows us in 4 songs they have potential opportunities, they're putting many different influences in all tracks and also lead vocalist Ingrid is very powerfull. After the Silence continues in a musical way where they have been with the record Final Fantasy and the band let us hear they have expanded. The musical instruments are taking full advantage, eventhough the demo isn't a studiorecording, and they're having free play. To pick out 1 track for example; Alter Course. This track really rises above the other tracks. This track is really contagious and the handmotion to the repeat button is made very quick. The track Final Fantasy is ofcourse familiar to the listener and known from the identical titled former cd from 2004. It's fun to hear this track ‘live’ for a change but it isn't a real useful addition or expansion, unless you haven't got the cd Final Fantasy in your collection yet ofcourse.

Conclusie:
The new demo from After the Silence which is purely made (according to the band) with one goal: Gather more gigs, nothing more and nothing less, is a pleasant record. Generally it sounds a little bit muzzy and not everything is in a quite good balance. Anyhow it isn't annoying and it gives you a real ‘live’ feeling. There is nothing adapted and nothing is smoothened. So with the real goal of the band in the back of the head they delivered a lovely demo. So, for all fans from hardrock with symfo / progressive / classic Rockinfluences it is really a recommend record and above all listen to the demo while keeping in mind the original meant goals for these recordings, therefore ‘Tower of Souls’ will not disappoint you at all. The band has potential opportunities, that's for sure! Hopefully there is a lable who wants to incorporate with this band very soon, because this is what After the Silence definitely deserves.
