4 TRACKS: Passage To Eternity – Alter Course – The Tower – Final Fantasy By: Toine van Poorten We know this Dutch symphonic prog rock formation for quite some time now and this is their newest four track demo. Right from the start, prove is given that the band is providing a high standard mix of progressive rock with a foundation of heavy metal and symphonic metal. The keyboard sound is important in opener “Passage To Eternity”, which is topped by the clear voice of Ingrid. Think about FATES WARNING and SAGA to get some idea of what AFTER THE SILENCE is all about. The drummer really puts the pedal to the metal and surprised me with his heavy style and firm drum beats. A great, up tempo opener, in which the band shows its skills. When the speed goes up in the middle of the song, they also reach the speed metal status for a little while. Great stuff! “Alter Course” is on next and it’s there that the bass player profiles himself in the beginning of the song. Everybody gets an equal share within AFTER THE SILENCE. The keyboards however are very much upfront in the mix, which gives the band the symphonic sound, that I wrote about earlier. “Alter Course” is again an up tempo song. “The Tower” is a short track. It contains some very nice speed changes, where the instruments do the talking for a while. An exciting trip, but far too short in a way. And once again we reach the fastness, where speed metal bands would be proud of. The progressive side of AFTER THE SILENCE shows up well in this song. “Final Fantasy” closes this demo CD. For me, this is by far the best track on this four track demo, mainly because of the instrumental mid-piece, where the band shows its skills as musicians that are eager to sound exciting and adventurous. With the keyboard sound provided, the name of SAGA comes to mind again. “Tower Of Souls” proves, that AFTER THE SILENCE is ready to leave the demo status. With songs like that, the band will appeal to many prog and sympho fans out there. AFTER THE SILENCE is very much willing to play live too, so if you are still searching for a decent symphonic prog rock band, then this is your chance to dig in. You won’t regret it!
